MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State head volleyball coach Dennis Amundson and the MSU volleyball program recently announced the 2009 team awards.
Senior right-side hitter
Ally Kwikkel received the
Georgene Brock Award. The
Georgene Brock Award is given to the athlete who made the most significant impact to the program. Previous winners include Ashley Nachreiner (2008), Stef Sandstrom (2007), Cassie Wolpern (2006) and Tiffany Graham (2005).
Senior defensive specialist
Kelly Sandstrom received the
Marge Burkett Award which is given to the player who best exemplifies the student-athlete. Previous winners include Allison Kunath (2008), Dana Ostertag (2007), Jill Randall (2006) and Tiffany Graham (2005).
Sophomore setter
Brittany Stamer earned the
Offensive Player of the Year award as led the team in assists with 1,442. Her 1,442 mark stands as the new school record.
Junior middle blocker
Amanda Thompson was named the
Defensive Player of the Year as she recorded a team best 115 total blocks for the season.
The team also announced awards for their category leaders this season. Sandstrom finished first on the team in Service Aces with 35, while Thompson led the team in total blocks with 115. Stamer broke the school record with her 1,442 assists and sophomore defensive specialist
Alli Rice finished with a team leading 480 digs, a new school record. Freshman outside hitter
Chelsea Fogarty finished the season with a team-high 413 kills, a new freshman record.
Minnesota State, seeded fifth in the central region, was defeated by fourth seeded Wayne State in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament, 3-2. The Mavericks ended the 2009 season with a 26-7 record, the twelfth 20 win season in school history.
