Getting To Know.................Adam Doll

4/9/2010 9:40:45 AM

Minnesota State senior netter Adam Doll is in his fourth season with the Mavericks. This St. James, Minn., native was a member of the 2009 tennis squad, which for the first time in school history, participated in the NCAA tournament. Doll is majoring in social studies and education with a 3.80 GPA.

MSU head coach Phil Brauer had this to say about his senior athlete:

“Adam will be a lifelong tennis player. He has coached high school tennis for a number of years now, and there is an obvious passion for the game. I think in the four years he has been at MSU, he has gained a greater knowledge of the sport, and will be able to use that knowledge to help him in his coaching. His knowledge has shown during the year as he has helped with our freshman in helping them learn the game better. Adam will also be receiving a Maverick Achievement Award this spring for his outstanding academic success. Adam is also a three time ITA All-Academic scholar athlete, going to tennis players with a 3.5 GPA and above, proving that it is possible to balance athletics and academics and do it successfully.”

Ten Questions With Adam:

1. How did you end up at Minnesota State?

I knew I wanted to become a teacher as well as play intercollegiate tennis so I began looking around. After visiting the coach here and learning more about the education program at MSU it seemed like an excellent fit. Growing up in St. James, Minn., I’ve been following Maverick sports for many years so I decided why not be a Maverick myself and be part of the great Athletic program MSU has built.

2. What are your favorite things about tennis?

How involved the game is. You never get to take a series or point off, as losing one point makes you just three points away from losing the game or much more a crucial match. Possibly the best thing about tennis is the high level of competitiveness and determination the game takes to play.

3. What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to become a Social Studies teacher in Southern Minnesota and hope to coach tennis, football, and basketball.

4. What is the biggest thing you have accomplished at MSU?

Being part of MSU Men’s tennis team first to make it to the Regional Tournament. I also take great pride being from St. James (class of 88 small rural city) and have the ability to compete against people foreign countries and other large cities in the nation.

5. When you’re not in the classroom or at practice, how do you spend your free time?

I spend it like all other college students. Working and hanging with friends. In the fall I spend the majority of my time HUNTING!

6. What is your motto in life?

Do your best by leaving it on the court each day.

7. Tell me about your favorite moment competing in tennis?

My favorite moment would have to be earning a right to play in the 08-09 regional tennis draw. Last year was the first time in the history of MSU tennis that the Men’s team made it to the regional tournament.

8. Do you have any pre-game rituals or do anything superstitious before competition?

Not really. Each match I try to wear a hat that I feel is going to be lucky for me. Let’s just say I’ve picked the wrong hats many times before.

9. What super-power would you most like to have, and why?

Mindreading… Having the ability to know what others are thinking can get you many places in life. It also would be a great weapon to have in your arsenal against an opponent or even a future wife.

10. If you were on an island, what would you want with you, and why?

I’d want a pretty lady….
