Mavericks Come Back to Defeat #7 North Dakota Saturday

1/29/2011 9:19:09 PM

Grand Forks, N.D. --- Minnesota State snaps a 15-game winless streak Saturday night with a 5-3 victory over seventh-ranked North Dakota.

The win marks the first since 11/13/10 when the Mavericks defeated Ohio State. MSU is now 7-0-0 when scoring three or more goals in a game.

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 7-18-3 overall and 6-15-1-0 in the WCHA, while the Fighting Sioux fall to 15-8-3 overall and 13-7-2-0 in the WCHA.

The Mavericks opened the scoring Saturday with a power play goal at 11:49 of the first period when freshman winger Kathleen Rogan found junior captain Ariel Mackley on a nice cross-net pass allowing Mackley to one-time the puck past Fighting Sioux goaltender Stephanie Ney.

UND knotted things up at the 1:40 mark of the second period with an even strength tally courtesy of junior Alyssa Wiebe who beat MSU netminder Danielle Butters. Freshman defenseman Kayla Berg and sophomore center Mary Loken each earned helpers on the goal.

After North Dakota tied things up early in the second, the Sioux tallied two goals thanks to sophomore Ashley Furia at 9:46 and sophomore Candace Molle at 10:29, putting UND up 3-1.

After giving up its lead and three goals in the first half of the second period, MSU rallied to tie things up at 3-3, with a pair of even strength tallies of their own.

Freshman forward Melissa Klippenstein used a wrap-around to sneak the puck past Ney’s skate at 13:51, and the equalizer came when rookie forward Kelsie Scott led a breakaway and beat Ney stick side with a wrister at 15:52.

At the 5:47 mark of the third, senior Lisa Edman netted the game-winner, burying the puck in the back of the net after freshman Tracy McCann’s shot deflected off the post.

Junior forward Moira O’Connor tallied the game's final goal with an empty net at the 18:46 mark of the third to seal the win.

North Dakota finished with a game-high 31 shots, while the Mavericks tallied 19.

MSU scored the only power play goal of the game; finishing 1-for-4, and UND went 0-for-7 with an extra skater.

Butters finished with 28 saves for MSU, while Ney stopped 14 shots.

The Mavericks will return home next weekend and play host to Minnesota Duluth.
