MSU Hosts #8 Mercyhurst This Weekend

Mankato, Minn.--- Minnesota State (2-0-0) hosts #8 Mercyhurst University (1-1-0) this weekend in MSU’s second weekend of the season. Friday’s game is scheduled for a 6:07 p.m., puck drop as Saturday is slated for a 1:07 p.m., puck drop.

Maverick and Laker History:

- The teams have met ten times on the ice in the past ten years.

- Mercyhurst has won nine of the ten games, including the past two meetings.

- MSU has been outscored 34-13 in the ten games.

- The last time the teams met was in 2010 in St. Cloud, Minn., where the Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. The Lakers shut MSU down and scored eight unanswered goals in the second and third period to take the 8-2 victory. 

- MSU senior Emmi Leinonen scored MSU’s second goal the last time they met as fellow senior Moira O’Connor tallied the assist. 

Lauren ZrustAriel Mackley, O’Connor, Leinonen, Jenna Peterson, Lauren SmithJackie Otto and Alli Altmann are the only Maverick players to play against Mercyhurst. 

- Minnesota State sophomore Lauren Barnes played for the Lakers last season as she gets ready to face her former team this weekend.

Scoutin’ Mercyhurst: 

- Mercyhurst, who began the season ranked eighth in the first USCHO.com poll of the season, split a pair of games at home against ninth-ranked Quinnipiac. 

- The Lakers posted a 4-0 shutout win on Friday night, getting goals from four different players. -Senior Bailey Bram scored the game-winner on an unassisted shorthanded goal midway through the first period. It was Bram’s 61st goal of her career. 

- Mercyhurst scored four goals in its first two games this season.

- The Lakers also received goals from senior Kelley Steadman, junior Lauren Jones, and sophomore Christine Bestland. 

- Senior netminder Hillary Pattenden registered her 13th career shutout and her 81st career victory on Friday. 

- Quinnipiac returned the favor on Saturday, knocking off the Lakers 1-0 to earn the split. 

- The Lakers took ten penalties last weekend, shutting Quinnipiac’s power-play down 0-for-9. 

- On the power-play Mercyhurst was 1-for-6.

- It was the first time in 12 career meetings that Quinnipiac got the better of Mercyhurst.

- Goaltender Hillary Pattenden turned aside 31-of-32 shots in Saturday’s loss and stopped 51-of-52 (.981) over the weekend. 

- Kelley Steadman and Christine Bestland were the only multi-point scorers, each registering a goal and an assist in the two games.

- Bram leads the team with ten shots as Bestland has eight shots throught their opening weekend.


The Rogan Factor: Sophomore forward Kathleen Rogan tied the school record for goals in a game  when she scored four against Lindenwood (10/1). The feat has been accomplished five times with the last time by Melanie Salatino vs. North Dakota Oct. 17, 2003.


The One-Two Punch: Sophomore Kathleen Rogan and junior Lauren Smith return to the 2011-12 season as the top two in points, assists and shots a year ago. Rogan went 12-9--21 with 86 shots. Smith went 4-11--15 with a total of 104 shots. The duo picked up where it left off last season as Rogan (5-0-0) and Smith (1-4--5) combined for 26 shots on goal against Lindenwood. Sophomore Lauren Barnes  (1-4--5) joins the five-point club this season, with her lone goal being the deciding factor in last Friday’s game and marking four assists no Saturday. Barnes, Rogan and Smith all scored four points in last Saturday’s contest, landing them tied for second at MSU in most points in a game. Barnes and Smith tied the school record for assists in a game with four. 

Power Play Tallies: After going 0-for-2 on the power-play Friday, MSU went 3-for-7 with 17 shots on Saturday against the Lions. Rogan scored two of the three power-play goals as Kari Lundberg tallied the third. A year ago,  the Mavericks scored power-play goals in eight different games.
