No. 7 Minnesota State Shatters Runs Record in Sweep of Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. --- Seventh-rated Minnesota State combined for 53 hits including eight home runs and 51 runs in two games on Saturday as they downed the Beavers of Bemidji State by scores of 10-9 and 41-20 at the BSU Baseball Field in Bemidji, Minn.

The 41 runs in game two is a new program record for most runs in a game.The 56 hits combined by the Mavericks and Beavers breaks in the second game is an NCAA Division II record for most combined hits in a game.

The Mavericks scored runs in the first four innings play take a 7-0 lead through four and a half innings of play in game number one. Sophomore Eric Peterson started off the ballgame with a home run, his second of the year, to score MSU's first run. In the next inning senior Connor McCallum continued his hot streak at the plate hitting a two run single to plate Peterson and senior Kevin Kramer.

The Purple and Gold used a pair of RBI singles by redshirt freshman Dylan Dresel and Kramer and a home run by senior Max Waletich to put MSU up 7-0. The Beavers came back and scored the game's next nine runs, including six in the sixth, to take a 9-7 lead.

But the Mavericks got a rally going in the final inning of play. Kramer was able to single up the middle and with two outs McCallum hit a ball back to the pitcher, but with nobody covering first base was able to beat everyone to the bag. Waletich than came up and with two strikes was able to hit an opposite field home run, his second of the game, to put MSU up 10-9.

Sophomore Mitchell Bauer pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three runs, all earned, and four hits while striking out two. Sophomore's Tyler Frohwirth and Lucas Henning each pitched 0.2 innings with Henning allowing four runs, all unearned. Junior Dakota Belter picked up the win and moved to 2-0 after pitching 1.1 innings and allowing two unearned runs.

The Mavericks outhit the Beavers 18-6 in the first game with senior Nolan Johnson and Kramer each producing three hits while Peterson, McCallum, Waletich, Branstad and Dresel tallied two hits each.

The Mavericks offense got even hotter in the second game. In the first inning, Peterson scored on an error and then Waletich hit a two-run home run to put the Mavericks up 3-0. In the second inning MSU added six more runs highlighted by Dresel's grand slam over the left field wall to put MSU up 9-0.

The Beavers struck back with two home runs of their own and produced a rally to cut into the Mavericks lead at 9-7. In the top of the third, Waletich hit another home run, his second of the game and fourth of the day, to get a few runs back. Kramer, McCallum, Johnson and Branstad all hit RBI singles as MSU put up a 10 spot to put MSU up 19-6 through 2.5 innings of play.

McCallum belted his first home run of the year and Branstad and Dresel each doubled home a run but not before the Beavers hit a home run of their own as the Mavericks lead 22-8 through 4.5 innings.

The scoring did not stop there though. The Beavers scored 10 runs in the next two innings to make the score 22-18 through six innings.

In the seventh, junior Chase Lonetti and Waldek each singled home a run while junior Kyle Toth and McCallum each doubled home a run and the Mavericks took a 27-18 lead. The Beavers added two more runs while the Mavericks tacked on another 14 runs in the final inning of play to force the mercy rule to win 41-20.

The Mavericks used eight different pitchers and freshman Christian Howell gets credited with the win pushing his record to 5-0 on the year.

Minnesota State (21-4, 11-3 NSIC) and Bemidji State (10-21, 7-9 NSIC) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for another doubleheader slated to begin at noon.
