ABERDEEN, S.D. --- Freshman
Alivia Garbe totaled a team-best 10 kills and added seven digs as Minnesota State dropped a 3-0 (13-25, 19-25, 19-25) decision at No. 14 Northern State Friday evening.
With the loss, Minnesota State drops to 8-6 overall and 2-4 NSIC on the season. With the win, Northern State improves to 13-1 and 6-0 NSIC overall. The Wolves have now won their last 12 matches.
Minnesota State quickly took a 3-2 advantage before Northern State found offense with a 5-0 run to steal the 7-3 lead. The Wolves continued to apply pressure opening up a double-digit edge, 17-6. The Mavericks made a late push with a 3-0 run including two service aces from
Micayla Porter to make the score 22-11. However, Northern State took the first set, 25-13.
The Wolves got things started in the second frame with a quick 10-5 edge. The Mavericks retaliated with a 3-0 run highlighted by a blistering kill from
Sydney Powell set up by
Autumn Risch to make the score 10-8. Northern State pushed back stretching its advantage to 14-9. The Wolves went on to outlast the Mavericks, 25-19.
In the third and final set, both teams exchanged points until Northern State found rhythm with a 4-1 run, 12-8, to force Minnesota State to burn a timeout. The Wolves then increased their lead to six, 17-11, after a Laura Snyder kill. The Mavericks battled back with a 5-2 run to pull within two points, 19-17, following a
Morgan Olson kill. Minnesota State could not get any closer as Northern State closed out the frame, 25-19, and won the match, 3-0.
The Wolves held the edge in kills (42-29), assists (42-28), and digs (62-44). The Mavericks totaled six service aces as a team.
Powell contributed eight kills with nine digs while senior
Jackie Jones notched five kills of her own. Porter handed out a team-best 16 assists and added two service aces. Freshman
Mara Quam rounded out the top performers with a team-high 14 digs and has now reached double-digits in her last nine matches.
Minnesota State returns to action tomorrow at MSU Moorhead. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
