MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team swept U-Mary, 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-23), Friday night at Taylor Center.
With the win, the Mavericks record their fifth sweep of the season and move to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in NSIC play. The Marauders fall to 5-9 overall and 1-4 NSIC with the loss.
Minnesota State opened the match by going on a 4-0 run forcing the Marauders to take an early timeout. Later in the set,
Sydney Powell and
Autumn Risch led the Mavericks on a 9-0 run with five kills and four assists to make the score 17-5. Minnesota State went on to win the first set, 25-12.
The Mavericks and Marauders traded points early in the second frame. Minnesota State then opened up at three point advantage, 7-3, after an
Ashton Lee kill and Marauder error. The Mavericks doubled up the Marauders, 14-17, following a kill from
Anissa Janzig. Minnesota State won the second frame, 25-10.
The third and final set, both teams exchanged points until Minnesota State went on a 4-0 run highlighted by an
Alivia Garbe kill to make the score 7-3. The Marauders fought back to steal the lead, 18-17, after a rapid 3-0 run. The teams once again traded points to lock the stanza at 23 after a Natalia Cruz kill. Powell responded for the Mavericks with back-to-back kills to seal the set, 25-23, and win the match, 3-0
Minnestoa State held the advantage in kills (39-23), assists (37-22), digs (40-38), and blocks (7-4). Additionally, the Mavericks posted a .311 hitting percentage.
Freshman
Micayla Porter totaled a match-high 18 assists while Risch reached double-digits with 15. Garbe posted a team-best 12 digs while Powell added a match-high 11 kills to round out the top performers.
Minnesota State returns to action tomorrow hosting Minot State on Parents day. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
